Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) with Acute Respiratory Failure Clinical Pathway — PICU
Discussing a Tracheostomy with Family
- Ideally, discussion occurs in outpatient settings
- If invasive ventilation imminent, ICU Attending/Fellow should consider exploring the family’s wishes regarding the role of tracheostomy in their child’s care. Ideally, this discussion should occur with the primary pulmonologist and PACT team.
- Providers should:
- Reassure the family that discussion is for information purposes
- Reassure the family that their wishes, including palliative care, will be honored as much as possible
- Explore alternate modes of therapy if not already done
See Considerations for a Tracheostomy for indications.
