Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn Requiring Nitric Oxide

This pathway should guide the care of:

Newborns less than 14 days old with persistent pulmonary hypertension.

Exclusion Criteria

This pathway is not applicable for infants with congenital abnormalities of the thorax and lungs.

Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) is defined as:

Arteries to the lungs remain narrowed (constricted) after delivery, thus limiting the amount of blood flow to the lungs and therefore the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream.
